Chopard: Geneva's Joyful Jeweler

Chopard was founded in 1860 by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in Sonvilier, Switzerland, originally as a precision watchmaker. The brand remained a relatively modest Swiss watchmaker until 1963, when Karl Scheufele, a German jeweler, purchased the company and relocated it to Geneva. The Scheufele family's influence transformed Chopard from a watchmaker into a fully-fledged jewelry and watch house of international standing.

The Happy Diamonds concept, created in 1976, remains one of the most original ideas in contemporary jewelry. The notion of diamonds "dancing" freely inside a transparent crystal case had never been done before. The technical challenge of creating a sealed space where diamonds float freely while remaining visible was solved through Chopard's watchmaking expertise. Each Happy Diamonds piece requires precise calibration to ensure the diamonds move freely without scratching the sapphire crystal.

Chopard's commitment to ethical sourcing distinguishes it from most luxury jewelry competitors. In 2013, Caroline Scheufele co-founded the Swiss Better Gold Association, and in 2018, the brand became the first luxury maison to achieve 100% use of ethical gold across its entire jewelry and watch production. This commitment extends to their high-profile partnership with the Cannes Film Festival, where the coveted Palme d'Or award has been crafted from Chopard ethical gold since 2014.
